What we wish they had

  • We wish they had FICO scores. SmartCredit uses VantageScore 3.0, and a lender may check a different model.
  • We wish they had the trial price on the public trial page, so you could see it before you create an account.
  • We wish they had prorated refunds. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the month you paid for.
  • We wish the Basic plan included a monthly 3-bureau report. On Basic, each one costs $29.95.

What it is

SmartCredit is a credit score and monitoring membership that has served Americans since 2003. It is built for people who want to raise their score before they borrow. Its main tools focus on credit card balances. ScoreBoost lets you move a dial to see how paying down or adding to a card balance may change your score. SmartCredit says scores typically rise 15 to 45 days after a payment posts, if you reach the recommended statement balance. Best Pay-Down Date shows the last day to pay a balance before your bank reports to the bureaus. That matters because SmartCredit calls card balances the most volatile part of your score. When something on your report looks wrong, Action buttons send your question or dispute straight to the creditor's customer service team. ScoreBuilder pairs those Actions with a personalized 120-day plan toward your goal score. SmartCredit notes that creditor replies and results aren't guaranteed. Your Smart Credit Report uses TransUnion data, and your score is VantageScore 3.0, a model built jointly by the three nationwide credit bureaus. ScoreTracker also follows an Auto Score, an Insurance Score and a Hiring Risk Index. Checking any of them does not harm your score. Both plans include credit monitoring alerts and Money Manager, which shows your linked bank, card and loan accounts with due dates in one place. They also include PrivacyMaster, data breach and dark web monitoring, and $1 million identity fraud insurance once you activate it. Basic is $24.95 a month with two report updates and five Actions a month, and a 3-bureau report costs $29.95 each. Premium is $29.95 a month with a 3-bureau report every month, unlimited updates and unlimited Actions. You can start with a 7-day trial. If you cancel within the trial, SmartCredit says you owe nothing more. You can cancel any time online or by calling (877) 372-3895.

How we make money

Finders Forge LLC is paid a commission by some companies we review, through the affiliate networks Awin, CJ and Impact. We are paid only when you buy through our link, and you pay the same price either way. That is how every guide and review stays free to read. No company can pay for a better verdict.

How We Evaluate

Every product here does three things for you. It helps you make, keep, grow or understand money. It is sold on what it does for you, not on recruiting other sellers. And its button takes you straight to the provider's own site.

We check published pricing pages, provider terms, and regulatory and BBB records. We do not test the products ourselves. Here is what we look for. Full detail is in our Editorial Standards.

Value for price

Does the product deliver enough real capability or outcome to justify what it costs, compared to what a buyer could get elsewhere in the same category?

Fit for the buyer

Who gets the most from this product. The "Best for" and "Fits less well if" lines above tell you quickly whether it suits your situation.

Vendor trustworthiness

We read the provider's published terms and check regulatory and BBB records for signs that the seller's claims do not hold up.

You pay the same price

We may earn a commission if you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes what we say about a product.

Pricing transparency

Is the price on this page what I'll pay?

Every price we quote for SmartCredit comes from SmartCredit's own site, on the date shown. Prices can change, so confirm the current price on SmartCredit's site before you pay.

How we check pricing transparency

Compare with alternatives

More Money Skills picks to compare, each checked against the provider's own pages.

Tie-breaker

Choosing between plans? Premium costs $5 more a month than Basic and includes one 3-bureau report. On Basic that report costs $29.95, so if you want even one a month, Premium costs less.
